Why July 14th Matters On July 14, 1789, Parisians stormed the Bastille, igniting the French Revolution and the ideals of liberté, égalité, fraternité that still resonate today. San Francisco’s ties to France run deep — French Gold Rush immigrants shaped the Clay and Bush Streets neighborhood, earning the city the nickname “Paris of the West.” In 1880, San Francisco hosted what’s considered the first Bastille Day celebration in the U.S., and the tradition has run strong ever since.
