2026 Sunset Dunes Bioblitz: Explore 400+ Species at Ocean Beach (SF)

Join us on Saturday, September 12, at Ocean Beach in San Francisco for a community bioblitz celebrating California Biodiversity Day! Explore local nature, connect with your community, and discover the incredible biodiversity of one of San Francisco’s most iconic coastlines. Meet at the intersection of the Upper Great Highway and Noriega Street at 10:00 a.m. for an opening circle. From there, participants will split into groups and head north and south along the beach to explore and document the plants, birds, mollusks, insects, and other wildlife they encounter. Ocean Beach is home to more than 400 species, including 28 that are threatened. Every observation you make contributes valuable community science data that helps researchers and land managers better understand and protect biodiversity in San Francisco. This free event is open to all ages and experience levels. Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or bioblitzing for the first time, everyone is welcome. This event is made possible through a collaboration between Reimagining San Francisco, Friends of Sunset Dunes, Surfrider Foundation, California Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Bird Alliance, Feminist Bird Club SF Bay Area, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, San Francisco Rec & Park, and the San Francisco Environment Department.
