Join us for the next edition of our monthly AI Philosophy Nights where we attempt communal sense-making. Each month, we bring together philosophers, historians, technologists, and social scientists for a high-level fireside chat, followed by small-group salon style discussions. This session: Giving a Damn in the Age of Indifferent Intelligence The problem with artificial intelligence, as our guest puts it, is that computers don't give a damn. Machines can now write, converse, and optimize but they cannot care. And as AI systems take over more of our work and cater ever more precisely to our preferences, the deeper risk is the slow erosion of our capacity to care, to commit, and to find things worth wanting in the first place. In this session, our founder Banu Kellner sits down with B. Scot Rousse to explore what care actually is, why it may be the missing foundation of the AI alignment problem, and how we might design technologies to recover our ability to give a damn. 6:30-7:00pm Doors Open. Drinks & light bites will be served. Doors will be closed at 7pm. 7:00-8:00pm Fireside Chat. Banu & B. will examine care in the age of AI. 8:00-9:00pm Small Group Discussions. Break into small-group conversations to grapple with these questions together. 9:00-9:30pm Whole Group Conversation. We will come back together to share insights and further questions. ~~~ B. Scot Rousse ("B") Visiting scholar and lecturer in the Philosophy department Uc Berkeley, and an affiliate researcher at Topos Institute. His work foregrounds the embodied, skillful, and caring dimensions of human life often obscured by computational models of mind and intelligence. He has also been drumming in punk bands his entire life. He writes about philosophy and AI at withoutwhy.substack.com Banu Kellner is an executive coach to AI Founders building frontier technologies. She is the author of the Superhumanist Manifesto and the founder of the SuperHuman Society, an organization focused on championing a future where technology expands human dignity, capability, and connection.
