Co-presented by Commonwealth Club World Affairs & KQED Live
How did the United States become the world’s leading incarcerator? Join acclaimed filmmaker Lynn Novick for a preview of her forthcoming PBS documentary, Crime and Punishment in America, executive produced by Ken Burns and Sam Pollard.
She’ll join the film’s consulting producer Rahsaan Thomas, former co-host of the Peabody Award-winning podcast “Ear Hustle” and executive director of Empowerment Avenue, alongside correctional wellness advocate Stephen B. Walker, and survivor advocates Jess and Annie Nichol, for a compelling conversation on the four-century history of criminal justice in America, and how Americans have wrestled with the problem of crime, the purpose of punishment and the meaning of justice. Much like the series, this conversation will feature differing perspectives from people who have been part of this imperfect system that continues to influence nearly all parts of our society.
