Join un on Saturday, October 10 at 3pm at Dance Mission Theater for a workshop production of a new work honoring the life and story of Bay Area artist and legend, Carlos Aceituno. Written and directed by Paul Flores, and featuring Fogo Na Roupa.
Clothes On Fire is a docutheater samba musical highlighting the history and impact of Carnaval San Francisco Annual Parade and Festival. The project centers on the life and legacy of Carlos Aceituno (1961-2006) a Guatemalan immigrant artist who arrived to the Mission District in 1976, and founded the legendary AfroBrazilian dance and drum ensemble Fogo Na Roupa in 1989, a twenty-two-time Grand Champion of San Francisco Carnaval. Carlos Aceituno was a beloved cultural figure in the Bay Area ethnic dance and drum communit, who participated in the second Carnaval San Francisco in 1980 at 19 years old, studying with Brazilian folkloric dancer and musician Jose Lorenzo, collaborating with Congolese drum and master Malonga Casequelourd, before becoming the first Mestre of Capoeira outside of Brazil under the mentorship of Mestre Preguica, founder of Capoeira Omulu. “Clothes on Fire” follows Carlos as he supports his father’s recovery from a severe heart attack in the hospital. Through music, capoeira, samba, story and song Carlos shares his journey from Guatemala, to San Francisco, to Bahia, Brazil and must choose between supporting his family, his community and his dance company. A free work in progress is scheduled October 10 at 3PM-4PM, followed by a post-show discussion from 4PM-5PM Dance Mission Theater 3316 24th Street, San Francisco, CA.
