Helmut Kunde Kiel meets the Bay Area: NO PUNK. NO FUTURE. opens September 10 with a conversation between NO MORE and punk historian Jack Boulware. Fifty years after punk declared itself against everything and everyone, the Goethe-Institut San Francisco presents NO PUNK. NO FUTURE., an exhibition exploring the connections between the punk scenes of Kiel, Germany, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Though separated by an ocean, both communities were driven by self-expression, nonconformity, DIY culture, and a refusal to follow the rules. Through photography, archival materials, music, and personal stories, the exhibition traces the people, images, and networks that connected punk communities across the Atlantic while highlighting what made each scene unique. Opening Conversation Join us for a special conversation featuring: Andy A. Schwarz and Tina Sanudakura of the seminal Kiel post-punk band NO MORE Jack Boulware, San Francisco writer and punk historian, and author of Gimme Something Better: The Profound, Progressive, and Occasionally Pointless History of Bay Area Punk from Dead Kennedys to Green Day About the Exhibition NO PUNK. NO FUTURE. takes its starting point from Kein Kiel, a project developed by the Kunsthalle zu Kiel with co-curator Andy A. Schwarz. At the heart of the exhibition is a series of photographs by the late Helmut Kunde, documenting the Kiel punk scene. These images are presented alongside archival materials from both sides of the Atlantic, including: Album and poster reproductions from Kiel Excerpts from the 1985 Germany tour diary of Cecilia Kuhn, drummer of the feminist punk band Frightwig German record covers Original albums featuring artwork by Winston Smith, creator of the iconic Dead Kennedys logo Rather than offering a comprehensive history of punk, the exhibition focuses on the exchanges, influences, and connections that linked punk communities across continents. Part of Alle gegen Alles. Punk@50 The opening launches a broader fall program featuring concerts, films, and conversations, including a performance by Berlin garage-punk duo CAVA. Presented across eight cities and two continents, Alle gegen Alles. Punk@50 explores punk not as a closed chapter in music history, but as an enduring cultural force that continues to shape visual art, music, publishing, activism, community building, and independent creative practice. Reception Drinks and light refreshments will be served. Special thanks to our sponsor, Sunset Paulaner.
