Within the show are imaginary worlds, creatures and observations brought together by life experience before the film industry and after. Additional works include furniture, lights and custom frames made from reclaimed materials from job sites and local surroundings. Randy continues in the film industry pitching original content and showing in galleries.   “My soul as an artist has always existed. My continuing film work is but a small portion of my expressive passion as an artist. As the film industry fell into prequels, sequels and other uninspired projects, it was vital to me to nurture that which has always been there within me. I am now very careful what industry projects I work on and with whom.”   In 1998, Randy Gaul joined Industrial Light & Magic as a concept designer. Prior to joining ILM, he worked for seven years as a freelance storyboard and concept artist for such companies as Wild Brain, MTV and Disney, specializing in creature and character designs as well as environments, costumes and props. Since joining ILM, Gaul has lent his visual eye and creative hands to such productions as Despicable Me, Rio, Peabody and Sherman, Madagascar 3, Penguins of Madagascar, Cicada Princess, Legend of Tembo, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, The Mummy Returns, Star Wars: Episode II “Attack of the Clones.” Madagascar 3, Peabody and Sherman: Rio, Despicable Me and many more. Randy is the Creative Director at Luminous Blue Animation where he oversees all visual design. Zeke and the Yimbees is his latest project in development along with Realms and Wubbles.   You can follow Randy Gaul on instagram @vizgaul In our Zappa Gallery we will be showcasing ‘The Artist Behind The Effect’ group exhibition by Passion Projects SF (PPSF)! Passion Projects SF (PPSF) is a nomadic gallery, shop, and community space dedicated to the personal creative work of VFX artists worldwide. They showcase paintings, sculptures, photographs, ceramics, and handmade goods by the makers behind cinema’s most iconic imagery — connecting the film industry’s creative legacy with the Bay Area art community. Founded by Creative Director Katharine Baird, with David Valentin serving as Executive Producer, Passion Projects SF is a nomadic gallery, retail shop, and community space dedicated to the personal art of visual effects and post-production professionals. ‘The Artist Behind the Effect’ invites us to discover their work on its own terms, beyond the collaborative demands of a production. A convincing creature, a believable world, a moment of perfectly judged light: behind the spectacle are artists who know how to make an image feel alive. Their careers connect this exhibition to Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm Animation, and productions including Star Wars, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, and Rogue One. Here, their independent paintings, drawings, and photographs reveal the interests and imaginations that continue beyond the screen. ‘The Artist behind The Effect’ will feature the works of Joel Aron, Leigh Barbier, John Bell, Joe Ceballos, Jiri Jackonwitz and Kim Smith. Explore the artwork up close, meet participating artists, and share an evening with people who love visual storytelling. For the Bay Area’s film and animation community, art lovers, designers, and students, this is a chance to connect over the craft, curiosity, and personal vision behind the finished imag…
