Drawing its title from Daviel Shy’s 2019 essay “Women Seeing Women: The Politics of the Sideways Glance,” the exhibition features artists who blur the position of beholder and beheld through works across sculpture, collage, photography, and experimental video, including two newly commissioned projects. As Gross writes in her curatorial statement: The sideways glance is both ephemeral, fleeting; affected, felt. Bodily. The sideways glance intervenes in the dominant mode of visuality that separates subject from object He who looks from she who is looked at Where, then, does the lesbian viewer, the “woman-seer,” exist? The installation brings together a series of sculptural videos and multimedia wall works, as well as a new site specific ceiling installation, to consider the ways ecological upheaval connects to bodily vulnerability and unruliness. A Verb Meaning to Wash One’s Wounds in an Ocean was selected from our 2026 open call by jurors Petra Bibeau and Kathryn Cua.
