Mitch Polzak & The Royal Deuces have the honor of inaugurating The Deluxe’s grand reopening at 1511 Haight Street, bringing rockabilly and 60s country music to a room that was made for exactly this kind of raw, reverb-soaked American sound. Polzak delivers the religious fervor of Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash on the uptempo numbers, then turns around and sells a honky tonk ballad with the quiet sincerity of Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings — a full range of emotion from a performer who understands that great country music is as much about conviction as it is about craft. For a room celebrating its own resurrection, there may be no more fitting opening night than this.
