Venmo: blackbirdbookstore to book your spot! Cost: $15 for a guided two hour writing practice It began when Farhana Huq, Founder of Brown Girl Surf, was sheltering in place as a surfer in Morocco. There, Farhana gathered a multi-cultural, intergenerational group of water women to sit, drink tea, and write together in her living room. Trained in a practice called Wild Writing, she’d curate poetry and offer jump-off lines in timed writing exercises, encouraging people to do their poorest writing, to write as fast as they can, and to write whatever they wanted. Everyone shared what they wrote, all without comment, praise, judgement, or critique. With Wild Surf Writers, she brings the same quaint, small village gathering and spirit to Black Bird. Wild Surf Writers is for any level of writer and water woman who seeks a safe space and practice to cut through the clutter of our minds and find the nuggets of our truth and stories in writing. Note from Farhana: I want to express that you do not have to be a writer to participate - even if you are a novice writer or hardly write at all, this is a space for you.
