San Francisco saxophone veteran Charles Unger brings the Charles Unger Experience back to Mr. Tipples for an evening of exuberant jazz, funk, and soulful grooves. A vital force in the Bay Area music scene for more than four decades and an instrumental figure in the club’s resident history, Unger commands tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones with an emotionally charged, full-bodied tone shaped by influences ranging from John Coltrane to Grover Washington Jr. Backed by pianist Sue Crosman, bassist Joe Nemzer, and drummer Tony “Steamroller” Coleman, the ensemble moves fluidly between hard-swinging bop, blues-infused improvisation, and dance-friendly funk rhythms.
