Michael Moritz was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1954. One of the most successful investors of his generation, he is a former TIME journalist, a regular contributor to the Financial Times, and together with his wife, the author Harriet Heyman, he is the creator of Crankstart, a San Francisco-based foundation devoted to helping those who might otherwise be left behind. Sorting through papers and photographs after his mother’s death, Moritz uncovered the history of close family members murdered by the Nazis. While his parents escaped Germany as child refugees after the war, the idea of being a stranger or outsider—Ausländer—haunts the family. His memoir, Ausländer, recounts that family history and explores the experience of exclusion and othering running through Moritz’s childhood and resurfacing in his adopted home of California.
